Sarah Peterson - fundraiser
This past Sunday the Drivers Club, in conjunction with the
Kenosha Firefighters Local 414, attended a fundraiser set-up for
8 yr old Sarah Peterson. Sarah is the daughter of a
Racine, WI firefighter and she is currently battling Brain
Cancer. As a parent, I cannot even begin to imagine the
heartache and the emotional rollercoaster you'd be on during an
emotionally draining situation such as this. Our
collective hearts go out to Sarah and her friends and family.
Infusino's Restaurant in Racine was the setting for Sundays
event. The Banquet hall was filled with people of all
ages, as they mingled and enjoyed the coming together and the
well wishing aspect of the days proceedings. They offered
tables & tables of raffle prizes, they had a 'Vegas Style'
spinning wheel, and a firefighter themed dice/race game.
Visitors were served a mosticolli and meatball dinner with their
paid entrance.

Kenosha Firefighters & family surround young Sarah at her
fundraiser
We met up with other DC members,
we joined other Kenosha FF's in attendance, and we bought raffle
tickets, had a few drinks, ate our dinner and talked with
others. It was, of course, unmistakable who the guest of
honor was at Sundays fundraiser, Sarah is by nature a slight
girl, but her colorful bandana and hospital surgical mask made
it quite certain that she was indeed sick. We gathered for
a picture with Sarah, and as we posed and huddled around, her
little brother weaseled in front of her. She, like any big
sister, pushed him out of the way. It was then that I
realized that this truly was an eight year old girl in every
sense of her being, she just happened to have been stricken with
this horrible disease. She didn't ask for this to happen,
all she wants is to be 'normal' like everyone else. I'm
sure by now she knows details about medical procedures that no
kid has a right knowing. Trips to the hospital are as
routine and mundane as heading off to school is to other kids
her age.
Sarah still needs our help. I'm sure the fundraiser on
Sunday was viewed as a success, but medical bills and the
subsequent costs of dealing with Sarah's condition are, no
doubt, still on the rise. So please, visit the link
provided and look into Sarah's story. If possible give
some money to help her on the road to recovery, or maybe contact
the family to offer a different type of help. A card or a
letter is always a great unexpected treat as well.
