2009: Celebrating the Year of the Ox (Dan)

New Year’s festivities don’t end on Jan. 1.
Many Kenosha residents will be ringing in the Year
of the Ox (Dan) in 2009 for weeks to come.
The Chinese New Year traditionally begins the first
day of the lunar month. The Lunar New Year is named
after an animal from the Chinese Zodiac and is
considered a major holiday for Chinese communities.
“This is the most important holiday of the year
for the Chinese and many other Asians,” said Jim Wu
Ann St. Marie Carls, president of the Chinese
Chamber of Commerce of Kenosha. “Since it’s based on
the lunar calendar, it’s a different date each year
and is Jan. 26 this year. In China it’s a public
holiday when everyone except medical personnel gets
seven days off work. On New Year’s Eve families in
China gather for a huge dinner then they watch the
national celebration together on television. Over
one billion people watch the event together. After
midnight they eat the traditional New Year’s
dumplings together with a peanut hidden in one of
the dumplings. The one who gets the peanut is said
to have very good luck in the coming year.”
